Chhatris are raised onion dome-shaped pavilions in Indian architecture, or funerary sites. They are contain elements of Hindu as well as Mughal architecture. The term "chhatri" means umbrella or canopy. The Chhatri series is an important recurring theme in Natasha's work and a defining element of Rajasthan's architecture, the structural leitmotif of Northern India. At one level they are undoubtedly fascinating - ornate, intricately carved, intriguing shapes. Exotic to Western eyes, signifiers of India, of Hindu and Mughal built design. But they are far more than that. Chhatris are incredibly evocative, of culture and people. To stand beneath the domes of the Royal Chhatris at Bikaner, watching the shadows lengthen at the end of the day is to feel the touch of Rajput memories. They resonate with melancholy and celebration, joy and pride.
